The George J. Mitchell Scholarship is an innovative scholarship program designed to fund students pursuing their graduate degrees in Ireland.
It is a fellowship program by the U.S.-Ireland alliance that funds graduate studies in Ireland. Each year, approximately 300 American students apply for the scholarship opportunity. The first class of beneficiaries of the George J. Mitchell scholarship began their studies in 2000.
In 2020, the organizers announced that the applications for the 2022 edition of the scholarship increased by 22%. This means about 453 students applications were recorded.
The Mitchell Scholars Program was named after former U.S. Senator George J. Mitchell, who contributed immensely to the U.S.-Ireland Alliance.

The program was inaugurated in 1998 by the US-Ireland Alliance president Trina Vargo with support from the Irish and British Governments.
The program has been largely funded by the United States Department of State, with support from the Northern Ireland Government, Becton Dickinson, and Cross Atlantic Capital Partners.
Many alumni of the Mitchell Scholarship program have gone ahead to become prominent individuals. May have pursued careers in consulting, law, academia, politics, and journalism and many alumni have made notable impacts in society.
Online applications for the George J. Mitchell Scholarship are to be submitted by September 30, 2022, by 5:00 PM Eastern Time.
